Hurdling

Imagine yourself on an Olympic track surrounded by thousands of spectators. All of which are sitting on the edge of their seats in the stands waiting for the hurdling event to begin. You struggle to block out their presence in order to remain focused. Grueling hours of training brought you to this point. Blood sweat and tears were shed to bring you to this very race. You close your eyes, and think back to less than 20 minutes ago when the coach said, “You can do this! If you falter, that’s ok just keep going!” You take a deep breath, crouch low with both hands placed behind the starting line and a knee touching the warm tartan that makes up the track. You feel a bead of sweat slowly making its way down the side of your face and you know without a doubt its game on! You quickly tamp down any thoughts of fear and immerse yourself fully in the moment as you hear the announcer say ON YOUR MARK! GET SET! GO!

You run with all your might and promptly find yourself facing the first hurdle. You clear it without pause. Everything you have goes into jumping over each hurdle you come to. This is what you’ve trained for all this time. Suddenly you realize you knocked over the hurdle you just jumped. Emotional reflexes cause you to lose a bit of confidence, and then you hear the coaches voice again. “You can do this! If you falter, that’s ok just keep going!”

Life is hurdling. As believers everyday is a race. There are many hurdles (stumbling blocks) that get in our way, and sometimes we falter. We’ve all been there, and are still running the race. Just keep going! 1 Corinthian 9:26 (NIV) states, “Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating air.” There is a finish line, and victory is on the horizon! Listen to your coach (The Holy Spirit) and remember Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
